How Much Does a Desktop Pick and Place Machine Cost?
A desktop pick and place machine lists for four figures, and the machine is often not the largest line on the invoice. Three machines in the same desktop class were listed at $1,499, $1,995 and $2,899 when I read their vendor pages on 2026-09-30. Feeders for a twelve part number board on 8 mm tape add $597 to $897 on top of the machine, and the upstream vendor's own bundle ladder runs from $1,995 for the bare machine to $7,990 for a loaded one.
Every number below comes from a vendor's own store page or from our own product listings, read on 2026-09-30. The additions and comparisons on top of them are mine, and I have kept them in the open so you can redo them with your own BOM.

Prices move, so treat those as one day's market.
The three pages sell accessories on the same page as the machine, and that is where the total stops matching the headline. Opulo publishes four configurations on one page, which makes the accessory share of the bill easy to read off.

Opulo's packages page lists the machine alone at $1,995, then three bundles above it:

The steps are $455, $2,995 and $5,995 above the bare machine. The last step is three times the machine price, and all of it goes to feeders and accessories.
Count those feeders on the slot rule we use on the Vertex 4, where 8 mm and 12 mm tape take one slot and 16 mm and 24 mm take two, and the three bundles hold 13, 35 and 70 slot-equivalents. A machine in this class has 50 slots, so the top bundle spreads onto the staging plates it ships with. That bundle buys part number capacity; the machine itself stays the same size.
Twelve part numbers on a Vertex 4
Feeder counts follow part numbers one for one, so the same arithmetic works on any machine. On our own shelf, the powered feeder four-packs are $299 in 8 mm and 12 mm, $319 in 16 mm and $329 in 24 mm, and the AS2 servo four-packs are $199 in every width.

At twenty part numbers the powered feeders cost $1,495, four dollars short of the whole machine. Wanting fewer feeders is a BOM change, and the feeder count page works through what a board really needs.
Tape width sets two different prices
Per feeder, the 8 mm powered feeder is $74.75 and the 8 mm AS2 is $49.75. Per slot the order flips, because a 24 mm four-pack takes eight slots and costs $329, which is $41.13 a slot. Narrow tape is the cheaper way to add part numbers, wide tape is the cheaper way to add slots, and the tape width comparison explains when a part forces the wide side. The two slot costs also stack: a machine with 50 slots runs out at 50 narrow feeders or 25 wide ones.
Line items that sit outside both columns
A machine that places parts still needs the rest of the process, and none of it is optional:
- Nozzles and head parts. Our nozzle assembly is $49, the six-pack is $69 and the matched pair is $98, with a Juki-compatible head module at $239. Tips are consumables. The 5xx nozzle comparison lists which tip fits which part size, and the recalibration walkthrough lists the measurements a tip swap invalidates.
- Paste, stencil and reflow. A pick and place machine places. Paste goes on with a stencil, one per paste revision, and the board then needs a reflow method, an oven or a hot plate. Budget for both before comparing machine prices.
- Tape consumables. Cover tape, splice tape and spare cut strip feeders. Film extensions matter on 16 mm and 24 mm tape, where the cover film can get caught in the feed path.
- Time. Feeder addressing, slot assignment, tip calibration and the first board of a new job cost hours. Those hours do not appear on any price list, and how the machine finds a feeder is the part that takes longest to learn.
What the price does not include at any level
The desktop class stops somewhere below a floor machine. NeoDen lists the YY1 at $2,899, and above it the class changes: three-phase power, shop air, and feeder positions counted in the dozens. The feeder rule survives the jump, since one part number still needs one feeder position, and the price per position climbs with the machine.
A desktop machine also places parts only: it does not print paste or reflow, and its cycle time is not in the same range as a machine built for volume.
Work out your own number
- Count part numbers, not placements. Every distinct order number in the BOM needs its own feeder, which is why a 400 placement board with 14 order numbers needs 14 feeders and not 400.
- Group the part numbers by tape width. 8 mm and 12 mm lines take one slot each, 16 mm and 24 mm take two.
- Round up to four-packs. Feeder pricing is per pack, so 14 part numbers is four packs, not three and a half.
- Choose a feeder family. Powered four-packs are $299, $319 and $329 by width. AS2 servo four-packs are $199 in every width, and the 8 mm Starter Kit at $219 adds the AS_FCB_V1.0 control board and the FD_USB_HUB tool board.
- Add the paste side. One stencil per paste revision and a reflow method.
- Add spares. A spare nozzle assembly at $49 and a spare tip set cover a clogged tip on a deadline.
